The Original

The E30 M3 was the product of BMW's famed Motorsports division, which was launched in 1986. To meet the requirements of the FIA's Group A class, 5,000 examples of a car that is to be raced have to be produced within a one-year period. Cars produced in such a fashion are known as an "homologation special" because of the necessity that they be built solely to conform to class racing rules.

The engine, suspension pick-up points, induction system and aerodynamics aids have to remain the same as those fitted to the street versions of the car. With the E30 M3 the fenders were slightly wider than those fitted on the normal E30 car and a rear wing was fitted on the rear trunk with a modified rear windscreen to improve aerodynamics.

The "S14" engine used in the E30 was a direct descendant of the M10 Forumal 1 racing engine. The M3 based on the S14 engine became the most successfful challenger in touring car history. A record-breaking 1,433 races, two German Championships and one European Championship were secured by the M3 from 1987-1992.

Due to the design of the special exhaust manifold which leaves no space for the steering box on the right side, the E30 M3 was only produced with left-hand-drive which is why the car has never been sold officially in most Asian countries, Australia or the UK.
