The idea of creating different versions of the Peugeot 404 was made before the commercialization of the very first saloon model. As the aging 403 cabriolet had never met the height of success that was expected, Peugeot decided to entrust the Turin based company Pininfarina with the responsibility of designing the new Peugeot cabriolet.
It was supposed to be derived from the saloon, but in fact the 404 cabriolet has almost nothing in common with it, apart from the engine and suspensio part. It is the first time that Peugeot presents a cabriolet so different from its original base. From its launch, has an option, the 404 cabriolet so different from its original base. From its launch, as an option, the 404 cabriolet is also available with a hard top in sheet steel with a gloss black finish. In total, 10,389 cabriolets were produced. A success, compared to the small amounts of the 203 or 403 cabriolets produced, in spite of a selling price which, certain years, reached double the price of the saloon.
