The Original

The BMW Z1, first shown at the Frankfurt Car Show in September 1987, was BMW's first open sports roadster after nearly 30 years of absence from this market segment.

At first this vehicle had been intended as a study only, but it generated such interest that BMW decided to produce it in a series. It attracted not only by its visual characteristics, but also by its unique electrically operated sliding doors. Their construction allowed to leave them open during the ride, providing its users with even more 'fresh-air' experience.

The body consisted completely of plastic parts fixed to a steel frame; engine and suspensionsions were the same as used in the BMW type 325i saloon.

With these properties the Z1 advanced to be a dream car for young and sporty people, who had a certain sense of extravagance - and some loose cash, as its small-lot production was elaborate and thus quite expensive which reflected in the car's price. In exchange the owners could enjoy the stability of its value: Even today good Z1s are sold at almost the original factory price.
