The Original

This is the Dodge Charger Daytona 500, as built in 1970. In 1969 Chrysler was sick and tired of being beaten by Ford and Mercury and set out to built an all conquering car. The main improvements were made to the bodywork especially the nose section, the streamlined nose generated more downforce to allow for higher conering speeds. One Charger Daytona 500 was entered in the 1970 Talladega 500 and dominated the qualifying with an average speed of 199.446 mph, this speed spooked the other drivers and boycotted the race. The Charger Daytona was never raced but it was the first ever car to top 200mph on average on a closed-course lap in 1970 on Talledega with a fastest lap of 200.477 mph.
