Ferrari 500 F2 ,1953
A change of the rules introduced in 1952 made it possible for Formula 2racing cars to participate in Grand Prix Races. It was not long before the Ferrari 500 F2 stood out to be put in the spotlight of the international racing arena. A star was Born!. Indeed, this relatively small and light weight racing car from Maranello possessed features that made it an unparallel competitor. Aurelo Lampredi, who had the reputation of being a magician in racing engineering, developed a high torque 4 cylinder in line engine with 185 hp for the Ferrari 500 F2. Among its other features were a low gravity centre, a well balanced distribution of aggregates, good brakes, and very goodmaneuverability. Alberto Ascari knew how to turn these features to his advantage only too well. There was good reson that he became a double Formula 1 Wolrd Champion (1952 & 1953). In his wake, other drivers, suchs Villoresi, Farina, Taruffi and the young Briton Mike Hawthom, added to the winning record of the 500 F2 with further successes. It was a period of dominance that led the Ferrari 500 F2and the name of Alberto "Ciccio" Ascari to go down in racing history.
Unfortunately destiny struck two years later. During a relatively harmless test drive on the 26ht of May, 1955 Alberto Ascari had a deadly accident, which sent the whole italy into a state of shock and grief.
