The Original

German Touring Car Championship (DTM) vehicles are based on production models for which output has reached at least 500 units. With victory over BMW and Audi in mind, Mercedes-Benz purpose-built 502 units of their 190E Evolution II 2.5-15 model equipped with a large front spoiler and a rear wing to improve aerodynamic performance plus four extended wheel arches to accommodate wider wheels. Engine output was boosted to over 300 bhp and the car's weight reduced to less than 1,000 kilos, resulting in a top speed of over 300 km/h. Production was completed three months after the car's launch in March, 1990 in order to comply with DTM homologation rules. In 1992 the Olympic Committee was to select the venue for the 2000 Olympic Games. The "Berlin 2000" AMG team was heavily sponsored by the city of Berlin as part of their bid to host the Games. The livery of the car incorporated the signatures of various sporting notables, including Gerhard Berger, Michael Schumacher, Ian Woosnam and Niki Lauda. The AMG team won the German Touring Car Championship in 1992 but the role of host city for the 2000 Olympic Games was awarded to Sydney.
