The Original

In 1982 motorsport was recognized in a big way. Apart from single-seaters, only four types of racing car were identified: Groups A, B, C and N. In Group A, 5,000 cars had to be produced annually. The brakes and gearboxes were free provided that they were homologated by the manufacturer. Engine modifications were limited: the exhaust manifold standard, pistons and camshafts were free but the valve size and lift were restricted. The suspension could be modified but the mounting points could not be changed. The BMW 635 CSi Group A won the European Touring Car Championships three times and the German national title in 1983. The car produced a double win in the twenty-four hour race at Spa-Franchorchamps and in the Nurburgring 6-hour race, the car took the first six places.
