The Original

Mercedes Benz SL 600

Mercedes-Benz showed the world its news generation Mercedes Benz SL roadster, codenamed the R 129, at the 1989 Geneva Motr Show. Luxury and safety were the priorities on the new SL, which featured an especially clean, wind tunnel tuned design and the promise of a two seat convertible every bit as safe as a Meredes Benz sedan.

A spring loaded roll hoop, which snapped vertical in 0.3 seconds when the vehicle sensed that it might overturn, was the most spectacular innovation on a long list of safety features, including reinforced windshield pillars and internally braced doors. The push button electric soft top, mechanized by 17 limit switches, 15 pressure cylinders, and 11 solenoids, stowed in the trunk in 30 seconds.

Boasting 326 horsepower(243kW) the SL 500 with its 5.0 liter quad cam 32 valve V8 featured the most powerfull passenger car engine built by Mercedes Benz at the time. But the V8 was excelled in October. 1992 with the introduction of the SL 600 offering 394 horsepower(294kW) by means of a quad cam 48 valve 6.0 liter V12 that pushed the 4500 pound(2,045 kgs) car from 0-60(101 km/h) IN 6.1 seconds. The R 129 remained in production until 2001
