The Original

The Fiat Spider 124 was launched at the Turin Motorshow in 1966. Based on a shortened Berlina chassis, the spider's body was designed and built by Sergio Pininfarina, who had seen off the designs of many Italian rivals. The resulting car incorporated design details of previous creations such as the Chevrolet Corvette 'Rondine' and the Ferrari 275 Spider. Final assembly was carried out by Fiat in Lingotto.

The first series, the AS roadster, was an affordable sports car. Powered by toothed, belt-driven twin overhead camshafts, only one belt was used, which resulted in the engine setting a new record low for production costs for a DOHC. The car also featured a five-speed transmission as standard and disc brakes on all four wheels. The 124 Spider remained in production until 1982 when Pininfarina took over and built the car under his own marque until 1985.
