The Original

As rallying became more competitive in the mid-1980s, Audi produced 214 units of the Sport quattro between February 1984 and January 1986, all with left-hand drive. This met the homologation requirements for Group B Rallying of a minimum production quantity of 200 units.

Of these 214 cars, 164 were sold to customers, 19 were kept by the factory for test purposes, 20 were allocated to motorsport, 5 were used to provide spare parts and the remaining 6 were retained by the company.

The key distinguishing feature of the car was its reduced overall length when compared with the normal quattro coupe. The wheelbase had been shortened by 320mm and the windscreen replaced by a more upright version. The engine was an all-aluminum 20-valve turbocharged intercooler producing 300bhp and 6500 rpm. The car could achieve 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 km/h.

The body panels were custom-made apart from the metal door and the lid of the trunk. The hood was made of fibreglass and the roof, fenders, bumpers and front and rear aprons of Kevlar GRP composite.
